Unlike many older cities, Norfolk has been able to regenerate its downtown area. The downtown area, and the tidal ways and inlets which create extensive shore frontage, make Norfolk an extremely pleasant city to live in. For those who like their water sports there are few finer places: rowing, sailing, and canoeing abound, and ocean sports are available nearby in Virginia Beach. Perhaps the most important thing Norfolk has to offer the college student is other college students. With 6 universities or colleges in the city itself, and more in the area surrounding it, the proportion of students to the city's 240,000 residents is very high. This means that there is a vibrant and thriving scene: the intellectual and extra-curricular life is excellent. This is, after all, just as important as the classroom learning in defining the college experience.
A Little About Norfolk:
The historic clash between the U.S.S. Monitor and the C.S.S. Virginia took place just off the shores of Norfolk. Great battles are still fought here on the grounds of Norfolk universities, where students debate important issues and study subjects ranging from marine ecology to international business. Norfolk colleges are very near Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean so there's a good chance your daily trip to these Norfolk schools will have brilliant waterfront views.
Norfolk is the cultural, educational, business and medical center of the region (jobs) and has one of the busiest international ports on the east coast. Right now the city is undergoing a strong renewal and Norfolk universities are actively involved. For you, that means lots of events and opportunities. Most Norfolk schools are urban (fun) and have low faculty/student ratios. Add it all up and Norfolk colleges and the downtown waterfront are happening places to be.
